On October 26th 2024 SusAir officially released its first foundational white paper titled “Airports as Living Systems” marking a defining moment in the company’s journey as a research-driven airport design organization. The paper lays out SusAir’s philosophical and technical approach to how future airports should behave evolve and interact with their environment users and time.
The white paper was developed over nine months by an interdisciplinary team spanning design theory systems thinking material science and computational modeling. It presents a bold redefinition of what an airport can be—not as a static facility but as a living adaptive system that responds to people climate energy and change.
Key Ideas from the Paper
- Airports should be responsive not just efficient able to reconfigure themselves based on shifting needs
- Design is not about shape but about system emphasizing how things work together rather than how they appear
- Resilience comes from flexibility and feedback not just structural strength
- Infrastructure must reflect time moving with cycles of use climate and social dynamics
The paper also suggests moving away from centralized terminals toward distributed modular systems linked through autonomous movement and digital coordination. These ideas are closely connected to SusAir’s early experiments in behavioral simulation and adaptive spatial logic.
Strategic Direction and Public Engagement
Mr. Askar Zhaksylykov Chairman of SusAir stated during the internal announcement
“This thesis defines the soul of SusAir. It is the backbone of how we think work and move forward. Our task now is to bring it into every model prototype and decision.”
To open up dialogue SusAir has launched a new section on its website titled Foundations where visitors can read the full paper or interact with key concepts through digital essays animated diagrams and video explainers. This platform is designed not only to share SusAir’s thinking but also to invite feedback from the broader research and design community.
Roundtable discussions with international experts are also planned later this year to refine the thesis into more specific frameworks for application.
A Platform for Long-Term Growth
Airports as Living Systems will guide all of SusAir’s research group directions design strategies and technological roadmaps for the coming years. It also lays the groundwork for collaboration with academic institutions governments and private sector innovators seeking more intelligent scalable airport models.
The release of this white paper is not the end of a process but the beginning of a structured design era for SusAir one rooted in curiosity systems thinking and continuous evolution.g SusAir continues to push forward a new narrative for aviation infrastructure, one rooted not in permanence but in intelligent responsiveness.
